Abstract

The author explored the peculiarities of the director's interpretation of Mykola Lysenko's opera "Taras Bulba" produced by Dmytro Hnatiuk. The purpose of the article is to reveal little-known pages of D. Hnatiuk's creative biography, in particular his directing practice. Analyzing the production of the opera "Taras Bulba", we have the opportunity to fill significant gaps in the history of Ukrainian opera, to analyze the trends generated by the realities of challenging times.

The research methodology is based on the application of historical, comparative, art history and culturological methods, thanks to which the originality of D. Hnatiuk’s creative biography is revealed.

The scientific novelty lies in the fact that for the first time archival documents and materials of the artist's epistolary heritage, reviews of performances published in periodicals were introduced into scientific circulation. This enriched the idea of cultural and artistic life in Ukraine in the late twentieth century, as well as revealed the phenomenon of creative biography of the artist, its essence in the context of socio-cultural trends of this period.

Conclusions. It is proved that at this stage of creativity the conceptual principles of D. Hnatiuk's directing were embodied in perfect art forms due to his cooperation with the creative team on producing the performance. In the studied production of the opera, the integrity of the director's thinking is clearly evident, which corresponded to his creative search not only in various spheres of theatrical activity, but also in the art of the twentieth century in general.
