«Golden Age» of the Italian opera of Odessa: Havrylo Androsov’s enterprise in the season of 1850–1851

Abstract

The conditions and the specificity of the Italian opera troupe activities in Odesa city theatre during the first theatrical season of the Androsov’s family enterprise in the first half of the 1850s have been investigated. The content of the main paragraphs of the theatrical contract subscribed the entrepreneur with the city authorities (called duma), which contained the financial and organizational foundations of the theatre, mutual obligations of the litigants, requirements for the composition and quality of the performing troupe and its scenic activities has been analyzed. The features of the foreign engagement of the opera company in the main Italian opera industry centres, the nature of the relationship between the impresario and the theatrical agent of the enterprise, the analysis of the troupe performing staff, the qualitative characteristics of the voices and the soloists’ acting skills have been analyzed. Special attention is paid to the problem of the company vocal-theatrical activities, the identification of the features of the repertoire formation in the conditions of European opera fashion and, at the same time, the imperial political censorship, as well as the qualitative characteristics of the artistes’ mutual interaction and also their interaction with the orchestra. The characters of theatrical communications between artistes and audience, the ways of honoring leading performers in the theatre auditorium and beyond have been detected, the features of the music-critical analysis of the Odesa opera troupe activities in the Italian theatrical and local official press have been described.
